Tween & Teen Skin Care Tips
Meet my sweet daughter Chloe! She is 12 years old tween and loves fashion (like her mama), cooking, and ballroom dancing. We have a wonderful relationship and any topic is open for discussion. I believe in having open communication. Over the last few years, I have been sharing with her the joys of maturation. Sometimes, this topic is well received and others times it isn’t.
When it comes to beauty and wellness, she is all ears and I love that! Chloe knows that hormones play a big part in maturation and this also affects her skin and appearance. My job is to teach her tools to feel comfortable and confident in her own skin. Helping her get into a good skincare routine is important in helping her feel self-confident. This task is even more important as we are getting ready for back to school!
Skincare can be particularly problematic for kids during puberty…there are so many changes happening with their body and skin. This is why having a proper skincare routine will be very helpful to your child. Here are my 4 skin care tips for your tween and teen to help them deal with skin changes that surface during puberty with ease:
1) DAILY CLEANSING: Teaching your child to clean their skin every day is the most important step in a skincare routine. Washing your face in the morning is a great way to start your day. However, if your child has a hard time remembering in the morning, it is the evening wash that is critical. The evening wash is particularly helpful in clearing skin. Have your child cleanse all the way up to their hairline and behind the ears. Since introducing Chloe to Clean & Clear® Morning Burst Cleanser she loves washing her face both morning and night. This unique gel cleanser has Vitamin C, Ginseng and a fresh citrus scent which helps to wake her up. She has remarked how her skin feels soft and looks clear with this face wash.
2) TONE YOUR SKIN: I am a fan of toners and there are so many benefits to using it. I was excited to teach Chloe that using a toner after cleansing her face will help her skin look and feel its best. This extra step is important in proper skin care. Toner removes any excess makeup or debris that a cleanser may have missed. It gets deep into your pores to grab dirt and oil that may clog pores. Using a toner also preps your skin to absorb the next step to skincare and that is moisturizing. Our favorite toner is Bioderma Sebium H20.
3. MOISTURIZING MATTERS: Teach your child to always apply moisturizer to clean skin. Another tip is to apply it before your skin is completely dry. Gently apply moisturizer at night while skin is somewhat damp for best absorption. Using a moisturizer is essential for beautiful skin. Now, this next skincare practice must be learned at a young age and utilized throughout their tween/teen years and into adulthood……using sunscreen and/or moisturizer (face cream) with SPF. Doing this will keep your skin looking healthy and protected from sun’s harmful sun rays. Olay Regenerist Whip with SPF 25 is a great option for your teen.
4. TREAT WITH CARE: If your child is dealing with breakouts, it is better to treat the entire face than just the problem spots. It is important to find an acne treatment that your child can use daily all over the face. Acne does take time to treat so allow time to come into play. Start with a gentle salicylic acid treatment that won’t dry out your child’s skin. Benzoyl peroxide can be irritating to your tween or teen skin and especially if they have sensitive skin. However, it does work. Always start with a lower concentration. Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum is a good one to try!
