This post is sponsored by Rogaine. It is known fact that we can not alter our DNA. Thanks mom for my big feet and crooked toes! All joking aside, this year I have made great strides in my health and wellness to face my risk of diabetes head on. While much can’t be done to change our peculiar traits and nature we inherit, we can take the necessary steps along with some grit to set ourselves up for success.
I have many wonderful cherished memories of my grandmother and late grandfather. They are immigrants from Cambodia who played a huge role shaping me to the person I am today. One memory that is always hard to think about is watching my sweet grandfather inject himself with insulin. I could sense the discomfort it gave him and as a child I wanted to do everything in my power to change that. I wanted to change his circumstance so badly, but I thought you couldn’t Defy Your DNA.
There is something I need to tell you! I have a “major” sugar addiction. It is bad! I can clean out a candy store faster than any Black Friday shopper! This habit had to be kicked to the curb though I knew it would be hard. The solution though obvious, is simply resisting the temptation to buy it. This is a game changer for me! Yes, I am a slower learner!
As a former fitness instructor I take pride in maintaining my health and body shape. One way to prevent the onset of diabetes is maintaining a healthy level of body fat. This has not been an easy task after having three kids and the resultant weight gain. With my first child I gained 65 lbs and many health problems along with it. However, over the years I have learned that keeping your fitness plan consistent will reap the benefits. Don’t be hard on yourself if you fall off the bandwagon – just get back on and move your body!
Nutrition is key in Defying Your DNA. It has only been the last couple of year that I have really paid attention to what I put in my mouth. I feel my best and function my best when I am eating fresh, nutrient-dense whole foods. Fruits and vegetables are your friend. Your meals don’t have to be fancy. In fact, the simpler the better. Fresh food tastes great. And, let’s not forget the power of hydration by keeping a water bottle nearby and drinking water even before you feel thirst.
DEFY YOUR DNA
Stress is a killer and because of my Type A personality and super perfectionist ways I can get my panties in a bunch. I can not “stress” enough the importance of managing your stress is positive ways. My favorite ways to decompress and relax are: exercising, shopping, taking a nap, journaling, meditating, and in getting lost in prayer. Life can feel like a pressure cooker and it is important to instill habits and techniques to feel grounded and centered.
I feel confident from my lifestyle choices in correcting a family history of diabetes. Although our genes determine many of our physical characteristics it does not have to control our destinies. We can take matters into our own hands through small everyday steps, big decisions or simple changes in our environment and lifestyle.
